Perfecting imperfect Photos - Digital touchup magic

Since mankind invented photography we have been plagued by issues that come with the medium. Even if you are a professional you will come across at least a few photos that are less than perfect. Imperfections are the fact of photography. There are techniques like exposure bracketing, light metering etc which will reduce your losses. But there are situations when even the best of photographers cannot take the perfect shot. It is part of what makes it fun.

Touching up your slightly off photos falls into a few main categories:

1. Cropping :
Often times there are unwanted bits and pieces in the frame of a picture. The unwanted passerby, The off putting trash on the floor, the extra bit of sky making the main subject look smaller, the weird looking tree on one side. So long as the unwanted element is around the edges of the photo you can safely crop the photo to make your subject take the front and center (or whatever else you are thinking of) position. When cropping your photo resolution is of extreme importance in that its safer to crop photos which are very high resolution - The cropped photo still retains a lot of detail Doing this to a low resolution picture renders a blotchy picture.

2. Spot Touch up:
Quiet a few times you get a great looking picture except for that stain on one of the couches or that wire running in the middle of the sky. This is where the touch up tool of Photoshop or other photo editing program comes in handy. You can erase the spots or make ugly wires disappear by averaging the surrounding color onto the offending entity.

3. Adjust Saturation and contrast:
Some pictures are great in terms of composition and framing. But the depth is lacking due to lighting conditions etc. These are ideal candidates to adjust color saturation and Contrast. By boosting the saturation your pictures can become more vivid and contrast enhancement may provide more depth.

Yes Digital tools make it easy to correct the mistakes made during taking the pictures. But they are only useful upto a certain extent. They are no substitute to good photography techniques. They may be used to enhance already great pictures to make them exceptional.
